Rhinoplasty: Surgical Refinement of the Nose

Rhinoplasty is a nose-reshaping procedure that improves facial balance. Even a small change performed during rhinoplasty can dramatically improve a person's appearance.

At Lowe Plastic Surgery of Oklahoma City, we perform rhinoplasty for men and women who are bothered by the appearance of their nose, whether it is large, crooked or disproportional.

When To Undergo Rhinoplasty in Oklahoma City

There are many reasons to undergo rhinoplasty. Most people are concerned about the size or shape of their nose, while others want to improve nasal breathing problems.

Rhinoplasty can be performed to change a nose that:

  • Is too large or too small
  • Has a large bump or hump on the bridge
  • Is crooked
  • Has a droopy tip
  • Has been affected by a past injury
  • Has a deviated septum

When combined with septoplasty, the surgery can also help with nasal breathing problems. If you're concerned about the size of your nose, remember that it may appear large or small only in relation to other features. For example, someone who has a small chin will often appear to have a large nose. Likewise, someone with a large nose may appear to have a small chin. Rhinoplasty is intended to balance these features.

During your consultation with Dr. Lowe, you'll discuss these details and determine if rhinoplasty can make the changes you desire. During this time, we can also educate you about the risks, benefits, and expected outcome of the surgery.

How does rhinoplasty work?

Rhinoplasty typically requires one to three hours under a local anesthetic with sedation. Two different techniques are used: the open technique and the closed technique. During open rhinoplasty, the doctor will lift the skin off of the nose to reshape the underlying structure. In closed rhinoplasty, the doctor makes incision inside the nose then and reshapes the underlying structure. The closed rhinoplasty procedure is used more often.

What happens after rhinoplasty?

After the nose reshaping is complete, the doctor closes the incision with sutures. The doctor will then apply a special packing in the nasal cavity, often in combination with a nasal splint.

During recovery, you should expect some swelling and discomfort, which is managed with medication for about one week. In two weeks, you can return to your routine, but you should continue to avoid activities that put your nose at risk for impact or injury. Swelling should fully subside in three to six months, and results will be fully apparent.
