As you age, your skin does, too. Excess skin or fat tissue around your eyes can cause sagging eyelids and puffiness.

Worried that sagging eyelids or under-eye bags are making you look older and more tired? Blepharoplasty can help.

Triple board-certified surgeon James B. Lowe can help you look rested and rejuvenated with blepharoplasty at his Oklahoma City, OK, office.

What Is Blepharoplasty?

Sagging skin and puffiness around the eyes is a common problem that many people face as they get older. Blepharoplasty is a safe and effective procedure used to remove excess skin and fat from around the eyes, resulting in youthful-looking, refreshed eyes.

There are two types of blepharoplasty: upper and lower. If you have sagging or hooded upper eyelids that make you look tired or obstruct your vision, you may be a good candidate for upper eyelid surgery. If you are more concerned about permanent bags or wrinkles under your eyes, lower eyelid surgery may be a better option.

Depending on your specific needs, Dr. Lowe will design a treatment plan that can address either the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both.

Are You a Good Candidate for Eyelid Surgery?

Good candidates for eyelid surgery are typically frustrated with:

  • Sagging eyelids
  • Obstructed vision due to hooded eyes
  • Bags under the eyes
  • Wrinkles under the eyes

To be cleared for surgery, you should also be a healthy individual who does not smoke or have serious eye conditions.

Combining Blepharoplasty with Other Procedures

Eyelid surgery can be performed on its own or combined with other plastic surgery procedures for the most dramatic, rejuvenating effects.

Many blepharoplasty patients at our Oklahoma City practice choose to combine blepharoplasty with a brow lift, facelift, or neck lift. During your consultation, Dr. Lowe will listen to your concerns and help you decide which procedures are right for you.

What to Expect during a Blepharoplasty

Dr. Lowe offers in-depth consultations to patients at his Oklahoma City, OK, practice. During your one-on-one consultation, Dr. Lowe will listen to your goals and provide personalized recommendations.

When you arrive at our Oklahoma City practice, we will escort you to our comfortable, fully accredited operating room. Both upper and lower eyelid surgery can be completed in about two to three hours.

Before we begin, we will administer local anesthesia to prevent any discomfort. We also offer intravenous (IV) sedation and general anesthesia to help patients feel comfortable and relaxed during their treatment. When we use general anesthesia, we have a certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA) on-site to ensure your safety.

Upper Eyelid Surgery

For upper eyelid surgery, an incision is created near the existing crease of the upper eyelid. This helps minimize the appearance of scars. Any unneeded skin is trimmed away, and in some cases, muscles are repositioned. Finally, the remaining skin is lifted and sutured into place. Using the latest methods and techniques, Dr. Lowe is able to avoid overcorrection and deliver natural-looking results.

Lower Eyelid Surgery

While upper blepharoplasty primarily involves the removal of unnecessary skin tissue, lower eyelid surgery eliminates both sagging skin and fat deposits. To perform this procedure, Dr. Lowe administers local anesthesia and creates an incision just below the lower lash line. Then, he can carefully sculpt the area by removing excess tissue, muscle, and fat.

Immediate Recovery What to Expect in the Days after Surgery

To ensure that you heal properly, Dr. Lowe will provide you with detailed aftercare instructions. It is important that you closely follow these guidelines to ensure a comfortable and successful recovery.

In the days after the procedure, patients can expect some degree of:

  • Tenderness
  • Discomfort
  • Swelling
  • Bruising

However, these side effects are temporary and should subside in about 10 to 14 days. If you are uncomfortable, you can take over-the-counter pain medication, apply a cold compress, or elevate your head to alleviate pain, bruising, and swelling.

You will need to take a few days off of work to rest and recover at home. You should avoid strenuous activities (which can cause bleeding and discomfort) and avoid wearing contact lenses until Dr. Lowe says it's okay to resume.

Long-Term Recovery What to Expect in the Weeks and Months after Surgery

Most patients are ready to return to work and most normal activities after 14 days, but it can take a few months to fully heal.

Because Dr. Lower strategically places the incisions in the folds of the eyelids, scarring is very discreet and barely noticeable by others. To reduce the appearance of scars, you can apply Vitamin E or aloe vera to the scar tissue.

Patients who undergo blepharoplasty at Lowe Plastic Surgery in Oklahoma City can enjoy their results for many years or even a lifetime.

How Much Does Eyelid Surgery Cost?

Patient handing credit card to receptionist

Eyelid surgery at Lowe Plastic Surgery costs between $4,000 and $7,000. The cost of your surgery will depend on whether you are treating the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. If you choose to combine your blepharoplasty with other procedures, your cost will also be higher.

Paying for Eyelid Surgery

Is Eyelid Surgery Covered by Insurance?

If excess skin is obstructing your vision, your eyelid surgery may be covered by your insurance. To determine if you are eligible for insurance coverage, Dr. Lowe will need to coordinate a visual field exam prior to your surgery and ensure that you meet all of the requirements.

Can Financing Cover Costs?

Yes! Dr. Lowe accepts CareCredit® financing to help patients afford blepharoplasty. CareCredit is a third-party lender that offers flexible repayment plans for medical procedures. With CareCredit, you can pay for your surgery in manageable monthly installments that fit your budget.
