Male Breast Reduction Can Eliminate Excess Skin and Fat for More Masculine Contours

Male breast reduction is a surgical procedure that consists of removing excess breast tissue to reduce discomfort and achieve a natural look. Using his extensive training, Dr. James B. Lowe performs male breast reduction at our Oklahoma City, OK, practice using today’s most sophisticated surgical techniques in order to help patients look more masculine and experience increased confidence. Dr. Lowe understands the sensitive nature of this condition, so he approaches each patient from a compassionate and educational standpoint.

What Causes Breast Enlargement in Males?

One of the primary causes of breast enlargement in men is a condition called gynecomastia. This condition is a hormonal imbalance that results in an increase in breast size. Another common cause of breast enlargement in men is significant weight gain. Men who are overweight or obese typically have large breasts. In many cases, when a large portion of that weight is lost, the size of the breasts does not reduce. This is discouraging for many men. Other causes of enlarged breasts may include certain medical conditions and excessive consumption of alcohol.

While enlarged breasts can negatively impact a man’s confidence, with male breast reduction, Dr. Lowe can eliminate excess tissues, reducing the breasts to a more masculine size and shape.

How is Male Breast Reduction Performed?

While enlarged breasts can negatively impact a man’s confidence, with male breast reduction, Dr. Lowe can eliminate excess tissues, reducing the breasts to a more masculine size and shape. Surgeries are performed in our state-of-the-art surgical facility under general anesthesia, using the most modern and least-invasive techniques available. There are two different techniques Dr. Lowe may use to reduce the size of the breasts. The technique used is dependent on the cause of the enlargement.

Men with gynecomastia typically have a larger amount of glandular tissues. To remove these tissues, Dr. Lowe must use an excision technique to reduce the size and reshape the breasts. He can also reposition the nipple and areola if necessary. For patients whose enlarged breasts are a result of weight gain or other factors, Dr. Lowe can typically remove the excess fatty tissues through liposuction, which leaves minimal scars. These techniques can take up to two hours to complete, and most patients need up to a week off from work to recover.

Who is a Candidate for Male Breast Reduction?

In general, male breast reduction is appropriate for most men with enlarged breasts, especially those who feel so self-conscious about their breast size that it affects their quality of life. The surgery is best for those who have attempted to reduce breast size through a nutritional diet and exercise and have been unsuccessful. Patients should ideally have reached their goal weight and have the ability to maintain that weight long term. It is important that patients are non-smokers and are in good overall health with no serious pre-existing medical conditions. These factors can all affect the success rate of the surgery.
