Helping You Achieve a Successful Tummy Tuck Recovery

After tummy tuck surgery, there are a variety of precautions you will need to take in order to prevent complications. Typically, you will need about two weeks off from work. During this time, you should carefully follow recovery recommendations and get substantial rest. Dr. James B. Lowe in Oklahoma City, OK, can help prepare you for tummy tuck recovery. At Lowe Plastic Surgery, you can expect to receive the highest level of care during every stage of treatment.

Recovery Guidelines

As you recover following abdominoplasty, it is important to:

Rest

It is essential to get sufficient rest, especially during the first two weeks after surgery. You may feel lethargic for several weeks or longer. When resting, it also important to position your body so that there is minimal pressure on your abdomen. Typically, it is recommended that you sleep at an incline for the first few days following your procedure.

Minimize Strain

You should also minimize your activity levels. You will not be able to drive for a few weeks, and you should not engage in strenuous activities for about four to six weeks. Dr. Lowe will let you know when it is safe to return to your normal routine. It is of the utmost importance not to strain your body before it has sufficiently healed.

However, walking around is a key part of recovery. This helps prevent blood clotting and reduce swelling. You should start out very slowly and increase the amount of time spent walking each day as directed by your doctor.

Take Your Meds

Any prescribed medication should be taken on time and for the appropriate duration as directed.

Maintain Surgical Drains

You may need to empty your surgical drains two to three times each day. Dr. Lowe can show you the proper technique.

What to Expect

Typically, the initial recovery downtime is about two weeks. Often, patients feel well enough to return to work after that time. As with most other major surgeries, you can expect to experience substantial discomfort for several days after your tummy tuck. However, pain medication can be taken to help manage your symptoms. The treatment area may remain swollen for a few months. Some patients also experience a persistent pulling or numb sensation in their abdominal region. Normal sensation should return over the next several months.

If you are considering tummy tuck surgery, or have any questions about any stage of treatment, we are here to provide answers.

Follow-Up Visits

You will attend several follow-up visits that will allow Dr. Lowe to monitor your progress. The first appointment will typically take place within a few days of surgery. Dr. Lowe will also evaluate your incisions and check your drains.

Sutures are typically removed during a second visit that takes place about five to 10 days after the procedure. However, they may need to remain in place for several weeks depending on several factors, including your body's natural capacity to heal.
