Common Questions About Eyelid Tuck Surgery | Blepharoplasty Surgeon OKC By Jim Lowe, MD on March 08, 2016

What is a blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty or eyelid tuck is a surgical procedure to remove excess skin and bags from both the upper and lower eyelids. Underlying fatty tissue that produces bagginess can be selectively removed or repositioned.  It can help improve vision in patients who have hooding of their upper eyelids.  Blepharoplasty will not remove “crow’s feet” or other wrinkles, but it can eliminate dark circles and improve sagging eyebrows.

Blepharoplasty surgery is customized for every patient, depending on his or her particular needs.  It can be performed alone involving upper, lower or both eyelid regions, or in conjunction with other surgical procedures of the eye, face, brow, or nose.  Eyelid surgery cannot stop the process of aging, but it will make most patients look younger or less tired.

Will my eyes look younger after my blepharoplasty procedure?

The vast majority of Blepharoplasties are simple skin removals procedures.  That is – using the same incisions that are common to all techniques.  The skin is timidly removed or treated with a laser above and below the eyelid margin, and a small amount of skin is removed without addressing deeper structures.  This limited technique is popular because it’s simple and recovery is very fast.  There is only one problem.  Skin is like taffy and it stretches when pulled and you may not see significant improvement of the deep circles or grooves around the eyes. So what do you do?

There is a better way.

We all know someone who had an eyelid tuck and in many cases they do not look better.  Unfortunately, eyelid surgery is like everything else in life.  If you want more, you have to put more into it.   Under the skin there are supporting structures that become displaced and loose with time.  In order to improve eyelid bags these structures must be repositioned or concealed.  The bad news is that this requires a bit more surgery so you swell longer and have more bruising.  Instead of looking great in several days it may take several weeks to recover.

How do I avoid looking like I had eyelid tuck surgery?

Getting through your operation safely relies on medical science; the way you look is pure art.  Eyelid surgery performed by different surgeons can be very different.  The difference is not merely the price and service, but the approach and artistic skill of your surgeon. The artistic goal is to rejuvenate the region in a natural way.  Dr. Lowe’s goal is for patients to look good without looking like different person.  He believes that facial aging begins with the eyes, and he improves the eyelids so patients do not look tired or mad.  His approach is individualized base on the patient’s unique features, concerns, and expectations.
