A Lasting Partnership with You

Achieve Shaplier Arms With an Arm Lift

The aging process or significant weight loss can leave you with loose, flabby skin on your upper arms. When this is the case, the only way to regain a toned appearance is through brachioplasty, commonly called an arm lift. At his Oklahoma City, OK, plastic surgery practice, Dr. James B. Lowe offers this surgical procedure to dramatically improve your arm contours. Dr. Lowe is a highly respected surgeon who has helped many patients achieve outstanding aesthetic results with personalized care.

An arm lift can make you proud to show off your arms again.

Candidates for Arm Lift

If you have sagging skin or fatty deposits on your upper arms that do not respond to diet and exercise, you may be a good candidate for an arm lift. Many patients choose this body contouring procedure after losing a large amount of weight to get rid of stretched-out skin that does not conform to their smaller body size.  Note, however, that an arm lift is not intended to be a weight-loss procedure. To qualify for this surgery, you should be at or near your ideal weight. You should also be in good overall health and not actively smoking, because smoking interferes with healing. Dr. Lowe will evaluate your medical history to determine whether an arm lift is right for you.

Arm lift surgery is an outpatient procedure that is typically performed under general anesthesia. First, Dr. Lowe will create an incision along the inside or back of your arm. If you have a smaller amount of excess skin, he may perform a minimally invasive arm lift through an incision in your arm pit. In any case, he will place the incisions in the most inconspicuous way possible. Next, Dr. Lowe will trim away the unwanted skin. He may also use liposuction to gently remove excess fat for the best cosmetic result. Last, he will smooth the skin over the new shape of the arm, close the incision, and apply sterile dressings. You will wear compression bandages to promote faster healing, and you may also have temporary drains placed.

Arm Lift Recovery

Prior to your arm lift, you should plan your recovery. You will need to take two to three weeks off from work, and you should avoid strenuous physical activity during this time. Dr. Lowe will give you patient information that will include specific instructions about how to care for your surgical site, and any medications to take, and issues to look out for. You should expect to experience some swelling, bruising, and inflammation, but you should call our office if you have any concerns. Discomfort should begin to subside within several days. Be sure to attend your follow-up appointments with Dr. Lowe so that he can monitor your recovery and ensure that you get optimal cosmetic results.

Risks and Benefits of Arm Lift Surgery

As with all surgery, an arm lift carries some risks. These include infection, bleeding, swelling in the hands, hematoma, and numbness. However, an arm lift poses a low chance of serious side effects, and you can reduce your risks by choosing a respected, highly-trained plastic surgeon. There is no way to avoid scars with an arm lift, but Dr. Lowe will minimize them as much as possible through the placement of the incisions, and they will fade over time. Most arm lift patients are willing to accept these scars so they can enjoy slimmer, younger-looking arms. The procedure can also improve your ability to find clothes, and it can give your self-esteem a tremendous boost.
